NM State Senate Public Affairs Committee Passes Domestic Partnership Bill on to Senate Finance Committee

The New Mexico State Senate Public Affairs Committee passed SB-183 after holding joint hearings with the Senate Judicary Committee today, Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010. However, there was a recommendation for this bill to be referred to the Senate Finance Committee.

An agreement was reached for the bill not to go the Senate Judiciary Committee, but only to the Senate Finance Committee.  Hearings were scheduled for Friday & Saturday, but both were cancelled and the hearing is now delayed until the budget has been dealt with.

HJR8 - Marriage Defined, CA, a DOMA bill, was tabled Saturday in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, which means the bill is held in the committee & did not pass out of committee.  This usually prevents a bill from passing in a session, unless some unusual manuevering is done.

Thought Provoking Commentary

Here is a thought provoking commentary: "Queer Kids of Queer Parents Against Gay Marriage".  I put it out there to encourage conversation and broaden commentary on our community's ideals and priorities.  We are a very broad spectrum of people with a full diversity of ideas.  And I don't think there is a right way to approach it, which I do perceive as a perspective in this article, but that there are many ways to look at the issue and this blog does expresses some ideas that have gotten pushed aside as marriage equality gets closer to reality and from an interesting and little heard part of our community.

Uniting American Families Act - Giving Foreign-born Partners Equality

Posted in

The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA -H.R. 1024/S. 424) was introduced
as a Valentine’s Day gift this year to same-sex, bi-national couples by Rep. Jerrold Nadler
and Sen. Patrick Leahy.

As you may be aware, the U.S. government discriminates against gay and lesbian bi-national couples
by not allowing us to sponsor our foreign-born life partners or spouses for immigration.
Because of this, we face the terrible choice of separating from the person we love
or leaving our country. As Americans, we should not have to choose between
