Lawsuit seeks to overturn Defense of Marriage Act

The first major court challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act has been brought by 15 gay and lesbian Massachusetts residents, who filed suit to receive federal benefits offered to married people but denied to gays because of the law. The plaintiffs are six married couples and three men with now-deceased spouses, including the late U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds, D-Mass. "This is a case that should go to the Supreme Court and in all likelihood will go to the Supreme Court," said Mary L. Bonauto, the civil-rights lawyer for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders and the lead counsel for the plaintiffs in Massachusetts' landmark marriage case. The Boston Globe (3/3)
