A new statewide political advocacy association has been established to fight for protection for transgendered people. New Mexico Gender Advocacy Information Network (NMGAIN) was established in November, 2000, to be a source for information regarding the transgendered community. A "transgendered" person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression differs from conventional expectations of masculinity or femininity, and includes transsexuals (male to female and female to male), crossdressers, intersexed, and feminine men and masculine women. NMGAIN will advocate for protections against employment discrimination, as well as open access to health care, and public and private shelters and services. The new organization will also seek to inform and educate legislators and local governments regarding gender identity issues. For more information contact Virginia Stephenson at 505-288-0491, WITAST@aol.com, or in southern New Mexico, contact Rudy Clark at 505-434-5144.
The Transgender Community Group of Albuquerque supports the entire transgender community. Through scheduled meetings and monthly social functions, the group supports all trans-identies, their friends and family. Transgender is a blanket term that refers to transsexuals (male to female and female to male), crossdressers, intersexed, gender variants, and femme men and butch women. We support all presentations in their life transitions and struggles.
