Welcome to the New Mexico Outdoors! The New Mexico Outdoors (NMO) is a gay and lesbian social club dedicated to the appreciation and enjoyment of the outdoors. Any gay or lesbian is welcome to participate in any of the NMO events. There is no application required for the club and there are no membership fees.

The New Mexico Outdoors typically schedules activities such as day hiking, mountain bike riding, campouts, southwest sight-seeing trips, river rapids trips, and horseback riding trips, just to name a few.

The New Mexico Outdoors usually has a scheduled event every weekend. Every event is led by an NMO volunteer. The trip leader is the contact person for the event and all questions concerning the event should be directed to her/him. The trip leader defines the particulars of the trip which includes the meeting place and time, what to bring, what to expect, what to wear, and what time the trip is expected to return.

For weekend trips it is recommended to call the trip leader at least one week in advance in case there are reservations (for hotels, campgrounds, etc.) required. For day trips it is recommended to call the trip leader around mid-week before the activity. Some trips require early sign-ups (due to advanced reservations) and a deadline date will be stated for those trips if it is at all possible.

Most activities are free except for money for carpooling or possible entrance or admission fees to certain places/events. Drug use is not tolerated at any of our activities and moderation in alcohol is expected out of consideration for the other members at our outings. Anyone wanting to bring her/his pet must get the OK of the trip leader in advance.

Since the vast majority of the club members are non-smokers, people who smoke are advised that smoking is not allowed in most members homes for the monthly potlucks, in the cars while carpooling to/from an NMO destination, or in motel/hotel rooms when being shared on overnighters. Smokers are asked not to smoke when in a confined area with other NMO members.

The New Mexico Outdoors has a monthly potluck meeting which is usually on the first Tuesday of the month. Typically around 50 people turn out for the potluck meeting. At the monthly potluck meeting a fabulous potluck starts the evening (usually starting around 7 PM) in which everyone brings their favorite salad, entree, or dessert. Following the potluck is our monthly meeting (usually starting around 8 PM) in which we talk about our previous and currently scheduled activities. We then set-up and schedule our next month's activities. This evening is very social and a great way to meet the members of the club.

Since there are no membership dues we do not have a monthly mailing list.  For those individuals that would like to get a several week advance listing of the events via US mail, send self-addressed stamped envelopes to NMO, 9604 Lona Lane NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111 for one-page summaries of all our coming events issued on a monthly basis about every mid-month. If you have an e-mail address then you can get monthly event listings by sending your request to NMOClub@aol.com. In addition, the monthly schedule is available on this web site Two months' activities should be listed.

The NMO is a great alternative to the bar scene. The members of NMO are typically down-to-earth, intelligent, established, and friendly individuals. They range in age from men and women in their 20s to their 70s. Many friendships have developed from the NMO. Everyone attending an NMO activity must be aware that other people coming in contact with us may surmise that we are a gay/lesbian group; you should be prepared for this possibility. Everyone attending our activities should be himself/herself (that's what the group is all about); but should use discretion when situations arise that could jeopardize the safety of our members (gay bashers, etc.).

The NMO keeps an up-to-date roster of our members and is distributed freely at our monthly meetings. Anyone may be listed in the roster but it is not required. The purpose of the roster is for use by members only and may not be used for mailings/phonings for other reasons or causes. If you decide to become a member of the group, you may take a roster home with you after your second meeting.

We would like to invite any interested gay or lesbian to attend one of our events. The monthly potluck meeting, or perhaps a short day trip is a good way to start. If you have any general questions please feel free to contact the NMO facilitator, Fred Jerina, at (505) 822-1093, or write the NMO, 9604 Lona Lane NE, Albuquerque, NM
