Deborah Fessenden is a graduate research assistant at the University of North Texas Department of Sociology. With artist Liss LaFleur and sociologist Katherine Sobering, both professors at the University of North Texas, they are developing The Queer Birth Project, an
interdisciplinary, mixed methods project that seeks to promote inclusion by researching and publicly sharing the birth experiences of LGBTQ+ people in the United States.
The structure of this project is based on a re-envisioning of feminist artist Judy Chicago’s Birth Project and includes original data collection (in the form of a survey and subsequent in-depth interviews) to inform a series of art exhibitions and scholarly publications. In exciting news, the first exhibition of the project is on display at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas.

Representation and inclusion around birth and family plays a significant role in expanding cultural ideas, accessing healthcare, and building community. Sharing our stories is the best way to celebrate joy and recognize adversity.
Given the landmark decision on Roe v. Wade and the cascading effects of the ruling on everything from bodily autonomy to marriage equality, we believe that this project is critically important in that it will help us understand more about queer peoples’ experiences with birth and families in order to advance conversations and advocacy for radical inclusion.
The Queer Birth Project is seeking participants for new online survey on childbirth in America.
We are seeking people who identify as queer (LGBTQIA+) and have experienced family building and/or childbirth to participate in an online survey. The goal of this research is to understand the experiences and perspectives of queer people who have participated in family building in the United States.
Participation will include a 30-minute online survey based on your experience. All personal identifying information will be kept confidential. You are invited to participate if:
● You are 18 years or older
● You identify as a queer person (LGBTQIA+)
● You have experienced family building, adoption, or childbirth
● You are interested in sharing your experience
* We are interested in the stories of gestational and non-gestational parents, surrogates, adoptive parents, or anyone who has experienced queer childbirth.
Representation matters for queer folks who experience pregnancy, birth, and parenting. We hope you will contribute to and share this survey with your queer parenting friends. It is important to note that participation is voluntary and participants will not receive any compensation.
